Can a shoulder bone crack heal on its own?

Introduction
Whether a shoulder bone crack can heal spontaneously depends on the severity of the fracture. Mild bone cracks may heal on their own, whereas more severe fractures—or those accompanied by displacement—typically do not heal spontaneously. If the shoulder sustains only a minor bone crack without obvious displacement, deformity, or functional impairment, spontaneous healing is usually possible with appropriate rest.

A shoulder “bone crack” refers to fractures involving the proximal humerus, distal clavicle, scapula, or glenoid labrum. The term “bone crack” generally implies a fracture without significant displacement. Fractures in these regions typically enjoy relatively rich blood supply, facilitating rapid bone healing. After immobilizing the shoulder joint for 6–8 weeks, patients may begin gentle shoulder exercises.

Can a shoulder “bone crack” heal spontaneously?

Whether a shoulder “bone crack” can heal spontaneously depends on its severity. Mild, non-displaced fractures may heal on their own; however, more severe fractures—or those with displacement—typically require medical intervention and do not heal spontaneously.

If the shoulder sustains only a minor, non-displaced “bone crack,” without obvious deformity, swelling, or functional impairment, spontaneous healing is often possible with appropriate rest. Bed rest and activity restriction are usually recommended during recovery, and full healing typically occurs within approximately two months.

In cases where displacement is present but swelling is minimal, closed reduction (manual realignment) may be performed. For more severe fractures, immobilization using a cast or brace can support bone healing. However, if the fracture is markedly displaced, cannot be adequately reduced manually, or has already compromised shoulder joint function, surgical intervention—such as open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF)—is usually required.

During recovery, it is advisable to consume calcium-rich foods—including bone broth, milk, and cheese—to promote bone healing.

The above outlines whether a shoulder “bone crack” can heal spontaneously. We hope this information is helpful to you.
