Introduction
Breast development is generally classified into four stages: Stage I: The chest is flat, and breast development has not yet begun. Stage II: The nipple and areola appear as bud-like elevations on the chest wall. Stage III: The mammary gland is slightly raised, and the nipple and areola protrude above the mammary tissue. Stage IV: The mammary gland is markedly elevated, the nipple is prominent, and the bud-like elevation disappears—indicating mature breast development.

Puberty is a period of rapid and critical breast development for girls. Therefore, adolescent girls should pay attention to relevant considerations during this developmental process to support healthy breast development. So, what should girls be mindful of regarding breast development during puberty?

What Changes Occur in Girls’ Breasts During Puberty?

Typically, the first sign of puberty in girls is breast development, followed sequentially by changes in pubic and axillary hair. Breast development begins early in puberty—often preceding other secondary sexual characteristics and even menarche (the onset of the first menstrual period).

Breast development is generally classified into four stages:

Stage I: The chest is flat; no breast development has yet occurred.

Stage II: The nipple and areola begin to elevate slightly above the chest wall, appearing as small bud-like protrusions.

Stage III: The breast tissue becomes slightly raised, with the nipple and areola projecting above the surrounding breast tissue.

Stage IV: The breast is fully developed, with prominent projection of the nipple and complete disappearance of the bud-like appearance—signifying mature breast development.

Thus, adolescent girls must absolutely avoid binding or constricting their chests.

Girls in puberty should maintain good breast hygiene—especially around the nipple and areola—which may secrete oily substances requiring regular cleaning to prevent accumulation of dirt and debris. If symptoms such as breast tenderness or itching occur, girls should never scratch the breast tissue with their fingers, as this may trigger mastitis or other inflammatory conditions.

Breast development is a normal physiological process; however, some girls may feel self-conscious and opt for tight-fitting or restrictive undergarments. This practice is inappropriate, as it impedes natural breast development—and in severe cases, may even lead to breast deformities.

We hope the above information is helpful. Wishing you a happy and healthy life!
