Introduction
Zu Guang San must not be applied to areas where the skin is broken or ulcerated, especially avoiding contact with the eyes and oral mucosa, as this may cause adverse reactions. Once the skin has broken, the condition may very likely progress to a vesicular-erosive type of tinea pedis (athlete’s foot). In such cases, Zu Guang San is not recommended; instead, wait until the wound has fully healed before using Zu Guang San to treat the athlete’s foot.

Zuoguang Powder’s primary active ingredients are salicylic acid and benzoic acid—both acidic compounds. This preparation is primarily indicated for treating fungal skin infections and hyperkeratosis (thickened stratum corneum). But can Zuoguang Powder be used when the skin on the feet is broken? Below, we address this question.

Can Zuoguang Powder be used when the skin on the feet is broken?

Zuoguang Powder is mainly used to clear heat, resolve dampness, kill parasites, and reduce sweating. It is indicated for keratotic tinea manuum or tinea pedis (hand or foot ringworm), as well as bromhidrosis (excessive foot odor), both resulting from downward accumulation of damp-heat. Its principal ingredients include salicylic acid, benzoic acid, boric acid, and Sophora flavescens root; its excipients include talcum powder.

Zuoguang Powder must not be applied to broken or ulcerated skin. In particular, it should never come into contact with the eyes or oral mucosa, as such exposure may provoke adverse reactions. If the skin has already broken down, the condition may progress to vesicular or erosive tinea pedis—in which case Zuoguang Powder is not recommended. Instead, wait until the wound has fully healed before using Zuoguang Powder to treat tinea pedis.

Applying Zuoguang Powder to broken skin may exacerbate ulceration. The powder can irritate open wounds; therefore, it should only be used after the wound has completely scabbed over and the scabs have naturally sloughed off. Moreover, while Zuoguang Powder may temporarily relieve pruritus and desquamation, it is not a definitive antifungal treatment. For effective management of tinea pedis, appropriate antifungal medications should be used—such as clotrimazole (e.g., Canesten) or miconazole (e.g., Daktarin) spray, applied twice daily. Supplementing with vitamin B1 may also be beneficial.

The above outlines whether Zuoguang Powder may be used when the skin on the feet is broken. We hope this information proves helpful.
