Introduction
In general, if a parotid gland tumor is detected, patients should seek evaluation from an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or a head and neck surgeon. Parotid gland tumors are relatively common head and neck neoplasms with a high incidence rate. The majority of cases are benign, while only a minority are malignant. Common benign lesions include Warthin’s tumor (adenolymphoma) and fibroma.

Parotid gland tumors are common clinical neoplasms, most of which are benign. Among benign parotid tumors, pleomorphic adenoma (mixed tumor) is the most frequent type. Patients typically present with a mobile, painless mass located anterior to the ear. Surgical excision is usually curative; during surgery, careful preservation of the facial nerve is essential. So, which medical specialty should patients consult for parotid gland tumors? The following addresses this question.

Which Department Should Patients Visit for Parotid Gland Tumors?

Generally, patients suspected of having a parotid gland tumor should seek evaluation in either Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or Head and Neck Surgery. Parotid tumors are relatively common head and neck neoplasms with a high incidence rate. The majority of cases are benign; only a minority are malignant. Common malignant types include Warthin’s tumor (adenolymphoma), fibroma, lymphoma, and adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland.

Upon noticing such symptoms, prompt medical consultation is recommended. Color Doppler ultrasound is often the initial diagnostic modality, helping to assess tumor size and extent. If the lesion appears benign and is small, some patients may be managed conservatively with regular follow-up and serial imaging to monitor for changes.

However, if the tumor is large or its nature remains indeterminate, surgical excision is generally advised. Subsequent histopathological examination of the resected specimen is essential to establish a definitive diagnosis.
