Which is better: babies conceived through IVF or those conceived naturally?

Introduction
IVF and natural conception are two distinct methods of achieving pregnancy, and they are not directly comparable. What matters most is the baby’s health. After IVF, fetal development within the uterus is essentially identical to that following natural conception. Pregnant women—regardless of conception method—must undergo routine prenatal checkups. As long as no abnormalities are detected during pregnancy, babies born following IVF are no different from those conceived naturally.

Pregnancy refers to the process whereby male sperm and female ova combine—either through sexual intercourse or assisted reproductive technologies—to form a fertilized egg (zygote), which then travels via both fallopian tubes into the uterine cavity for implantation.

Are babies conceived via IVF healthier or better than those conceived naturally?

IVF-conceived and naturally conceived babies differ in their conception methods, making direct comparison inappropriate. What truly matters is the baby’s health—both are equally good if healthy.

1. In vitro fertilization (IVF): Commonly known as “test-tube baby” technology, IVF involves retrieving eggs and sperm and combining them in a laboratory setting to achieve fertilization and early embryonic development. The resulting embryo(s) are then transferred into the mother’s uterus for further gestation. After successful IVF, fetal development within the uterus proceeds identically to that of natural conception. Pregnant women undergoing IVF must still attend routine prenatal check-ups. Provided no abnormalities arise during gestation, IVF babies are no different from naturally conceived infants after birth.

2. Natural conception: In healthy women, ovulation occurs monthly. Once matured in the ovaries, the egg is released and transported via the fallopian tubes toward the uterus. During the fertile window, sexual intercourse allows sperm to meet and fertilize the egg spontaneously—without external hormonal stimulation or medical intervention—resulting in natural conception. As with IVF pregnancies, women conceiving naturally should also undergo regular prenatal examinations to monitor fetal development within the uterine cavity.

The above outlines the key considerations regarding whether IVF-conceived or naturally conceived babies are “better.” We hope this information has been helpful.
