Introduction
Whether foot odor is contagious primarily depends on its underlying cause. If it is caused by tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), it is contagious. Foot odor typically arises from three main causes: First, excessive sweating of the feet combined with well-hydrated stratum corneum (outermost skin layer) — this type is non-contagious. Second, bacterial infection with *Corynebacterium* species, which commonly occurs when the feet are excessively moist—often due to heavy sweating—creating an environment conducive to bacterial growth.

Some men working in the construction industry walk for extended periods, causing excessive foot sweating; over time, this may lead to foot odor. So, is sweaty feet and foot odor contagious?

Is sweaty feet and foot odor contagious?

Whether foot odor is contagious primarily depends on its underlying cause. If it results from tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), it is indeed contagious. Foot odor generally arises from three main causes: First, excessive foot sweating combined with hydrated stratum corneum (outer skin layer) — this condition is non-contagious. Second, bacterial infection by Corynebacterium species, often due to persistently moist skin caused by excessive sweating; this type is also non-contagious. Third, superficial fungal infection—specifically tinea pedis—which can cause foot odor. Fungal infections associated with tinea pedis are contagious and can easily spread to others.

Individuals with foot odor should prioritize hygiene and maintain dry skin. Wash feet several times daily and change socks frequently. Avoid wearing non-breathable footwear such as athletic shoes or travel shoes, which may exacerbate sweating and worsen odor. Also, limit consumption of foods that promote sweating—such as chili peppers, raw onions, and raw garlic. Opt instead for well-ventilated footwear to ensure adequate foot ventilation and dryness. Change shoes and socks regularly, wash feet frequently, and keep feet clean.

Soaking feet nightly in warm water mixed with an appropriate amount of white vinegar or table salt helps kill bacteria, relieve itching, and reduce foot odor. Alternatively, decoct herbs such as Sophora flavescens, Poria cocos, and Dictamnus dasycarpus, then soak feet in the warm solution to treat hyperhidrosis and foot odor. Another option involves grinding erythromycin tablets and borneol into a fine powder, then applying the mixture evenly onto the feet using a damp towel—this also helps manage excessive foot sweating and odor. We hope this information proves helpful!
