Introduction
Individuals with keratosis pilaris (“chicken skin”) may use keratolytic agents to alleviate symptom severity. Most cases respond well to a 3% salicylic acid ointment or adapalene gel. If the skin is notably dry, a 10% urea cream may be used. Additionally, increasing dietary intake of vitamin A is recommended—foods rich in vitamin A, such as carrots and apples, are excellent choices.
“Chicken skin,” commonly known as keratosis pilaris, is primarily caused by congenital (genetic) factors. So, what topical medications can be used for chicken skin?
Topical Medications for Chicken Skin
For chicken skin, keratolytic agents may be selected to alleviate symptoms of keratosis pilaris. In most cases, a 3% salicylic acid ointment or adapalene gel is effective. If accompanying dryness is present, a 10% urea cream may be used. Additionally, it is recommended to increase dietary intake of vitamin A—foods rich in vitamin A, such as carrots and apples, are beneficial. From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), herbs that nourish and moisturize the skin, promote blood circulation, resolve stasis, dispel wind, and relieve itching—such as Rehmannia glutinosa (Sheng Di Huang), Ophiopogon japonicus (Mai Dong), Ligustrum lucidum (Nu Zhen Zi), and Paeonia lactiflora (Bai Shao)—may be considered.
Clinically, “chicken skin” is termed keratosis pilaris—a hereditary dermatosis most frequently affecting the neck, thighs, and lateral aspects of the upper arms. It manifests as localized hyperpigmentation and rough, sandpaper-like skin texture, with discrete, follicular keratotic papules. Most patients experience no pruritus or other discomfort, so specific treatment is generally unnecessary. However, if hyperkeratosis is severe and cosmetically bothersome, topical pharmacotherapy may be considered.
Chicken skin is a relatively common condition, often resulting from inadequate skincare or genetic predisposition. Chronic selective eating or picky eating habits may lead to deficiencies in trace elements, adversely affecting skin health and contributing to keratosis pilaris. Moreover, this condition has a recognized hereditary component. Prolonged exposure to damp environments and poor personal hygiene may also exacerbate the condition.
