Introduction
Abdominal bloating may result from swallowing excessive air while eating and talking. It may also occur when undigested food residues accumulate in the intestines and undergo fermentation, producing gas that cannot be expelled promptly. Additionally, certain medical conditions—such as intestinal obstruction, intestinal tumors, indigestion, or impaired gastrointestinal motility—can also cause abdominal bloating.

Abdominal bloating is a common gastrointestinal symptom—not a disease itself—and is often accompanied by belching, reduced bowel movements, and abdominal pain. Common causes include eating too quickly or talking while eating, which leads to excessive air swallowing; consuming gas-producing foods; and accumulation of undigested food residues in the intestines, where bacterial fermentation generates gas that cannot be expelled promptly. Abdominal bloating may also occur in certain pathological conditions, such as intestinal obstruction, intestinal tumors, indigestion, or impaired gastrointestinal motility.

For managing abdominal bloating, increasing physical activity and avoiding greasy or irritating foods are recommended first-line measures. Regarding dietary habits, meals should be evenly distributed across three daily servings. Portion control is important—aim to eat until about 80–90% full to avoid overloading the digestive system. Abdominal massage may help promote digestion. A light, balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits (e.g., tomatoes) and adequate hydration (e.g., drinking warm water upon waking and a banana before bedtime) can also alleviate bloating. If recent onset or worsening of bloating is observed—particularly with noticeable abdominal distension—an abdominal ultrasound and blood tests (including liver and kidney function panels) should be performed to rule out underlying conditions such as ascites.
