Introduction
Abdominal bloating may result from swallowing excessive air while talking during meals. It can also occur when food residues accumulate in the intestines and undergo fermentation, producing gas that cannot be expelled promptly. Additionally, certain medical conditions—such as intestinal obstruction, intestinal tumors, indigestion, and impaired gastrointestinal motility—may also cause abdominal bloating.

Abdominal bloating is a common gastrointestinal symptom—not a disease itself—and is often accompanied by belching, reduced bowel movements, and abdominal pain. For example, eating too quickly or talking while eating may lead to excessive air swallowing. Additionally, consuming gas-producing foods—such as those whose undigested residues accumulate in the intestines and undergo fermentation—can generate gas that cannot be expelled promptly, thereby causing bloating. Bloating may also occur in certain pathological conditions, including intestinal obstruction, intestinal tumors, indigestion, and impaired gastrointestinal motility.

For managing abdominal bloating, increasing physical activity and reducing intake of greasy or spicy foods are recommended first-line measures. Regarding dietary habits, meals should be evenly distributed across three daily servings; portion sizes should aim for approximately 80–90% satiety—avoiding overeating—to accommodate the digestive capacity of the gastrointestinal tract. Abdominal massage may also help. A light, balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits (e.g., tomatoes) is advised, along with adequate hydration. Eating a banana before bedtime and drinking warm water upon waking each morning can further alleviate bloating. If recent bloating has worsened significantly—especially if accompanied by a noticeable increase in abdominal girth—abdominal ultrasound or blood biochemical tests (including liver and kidney function assessments) should be performed to rule out underlying pathologies such as ascites.
