What Is an Abnormal Pregnancy?

Introduction
Abnormal pregnancy refers to hydatidiform mole and ectopic pregnancy. Hydatidiform mole is an abnormal pregnancy caused by chromosomal abnormalities. Ultrasound examination reveals no normal fetal heartbeat or fetal pole; instead, a “snowstorm” appearance is observed within the uterine cavity. During dilation and curettage (D&C), grape-like vesicles are found—hence the term “hydatidiform mole.”

Since mothers require regular prenatal check-ups at the hospital during pregnancy—as guided by their physicians—to monitor fetal development and prevent complications, what exactly constitutes an abnormal pregnancy?

What Is an Abnormal Pregnancy?

Abnormal pregnancy refers to conditions such as molar pregnancy and ectopic pregnancy. Molar pregnancy is a type of abnormal pregnancy caused by chromosomal abnormalities. Ultrasound fails to detect a normal fetal heartbeat or embryonic pole; instead, the uterine cavity displays a “snowstorm” appearance. During dilation and curettage (D&C), grape-like vesicles are typically observed—hence the term “hydatidiform mole.” Prompt D&C is essential, and effective contraception must be strictly avoided for at least one year post-procedure.

Ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo implants outside the uterine cavity—most commonly within the fallopian tube. Due to the narrow lumen of the fallopian tube, an ectopic pregnancy may rupture, leading to intra-abdominal hemorrhage that can become life-threatening for the mother. Hospital admission for close observation is required. If the condition deteriorates, surgical intervention—including laparotomy and salpingectomy of the affected side—is necessary.

For patients undergoing surgery, healthcare providers must explain the necessity of the procedure to both the patient and her family prior to surgery. The environment should remain quiet and orderly to alleviate anxiety and fear, thereby facilitating patient acceptance of the surgical plan. For non-surgical candidates, nursing care includes explaining the feasibility and potential outcomes of medical management while assisting physicians in preparing for possible emergency surgery. Close monitoring of vital signs is essential both preoperatively and postoperatively.
