Why Does Constipation Occur When Taking Folic Acid During Pregnancy?
During early pregnancy, some women take a multivitamin supplement containing folic acid—often referred to as “composite folic acid.” In addition to folic acid, these supplements typically contain various other vitamins and minerals, including calcium and iron. Such composite formulations are more likely to cause constipation.

If constipation is caused by folic acid supplementation, several interventions may help: • Consider switching to a different brand of folic acid supplement—or opt for plain folic acid tablets without added vitamins or minerals. • Engage in appropriate physical activity: walk regularly after meals and after taking folic acid to promote gastrointestinal motility and emptying. • Increase dietary intake of vegetables and dietary fiber to soften stools. • If constipation becomes severe, lactulose (an osmotic laxative) may be taken to soften stools, and glycerin suppositories (e.g., Dulcolax®) may be used to facilitate smooth bowel evacuation. Around the sixth week of gestation, early pregnancy symptoms commonly begin to appear, including amenorrhea, breast tenderness, swelling, and itching; nausea; fatigue; morning vomiting; hyperpigmentation of the skin; and increased urinary frequency. Pregnant women should avoid strenuous physical labor and excessive fatigue, prioritizing adequate rest. Clothing should be loose and comfortable—tight-fitting garments should be avoided. Regarding diet, adopt the principle of “small, frequent meals,” and emphasize foods that help alleviate nausea and vomiting, such as fresh fruits.

It is advisable to abstain from sexual intercourse during early pregnancy to minimize potential risks to the developing fetus. We hope this article has been helpful to you!
