What Causes Pain in the Bottom of the Foot?
There are four primary causes of plantar (sole-of-the-foot) pain:
1. Individuals who frequently engage in brisk walking or intense running may subject their feet—particularly the Achilles tendon and foot muscles—to prolonged or excessive physical stress. Over time, this cumulative strain can lead to inflammation and subsequent plantar pain.
2. Regular wearers of rigid-soled or high-heeled shoes expose the soles of their feet to greater impact forces and reduced shock absorption, placing increased pressure and tension on the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon. To mitigate this, it is advisable to select footwear with robust arch support and thick, cushioned soles. Additionally, keeping a pair of lightweight, flat shoes or slippers at the office for occasional use can help relieve foot fatigue.
3. Individuals with higher body weight experience greater mechanical load on the feet during physical activity. Moreover, limited ankle joint mobility often reduces the natural shock-absorbing capacity, thereby increasing susceptibility to injury.
4. Older adults: With advancing age, the elasticity and flexibility of the plantar fascia gradually decline, raising the risk of micro-tears during physical activity. To minimize injury risk, older adults should perform thorough stretching before and after exercise and consciously incorporate foot-strengthening and flexibility-enhancing exercises into their daily routines.
