Why Do Joints Hurt After Drinking Alcohol?

Introduction
Joint pain after alcohol consumption primarily stems from two causes. First, alcohol impairs balance and gait stability—especially when walking on uneven surfaces—thereby altering weight-bearing patterns on the knee joint. This increases the risk of injury to the knee joint itself or to surrounding soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, fascia, and tendons. Such injuries often trigger localized inflammatory changes, along with hyperemia and swelling, resulting in significant joint pain.

It is not uncommon for individuals to experience joint pain after drinking alcohol, yet many are unsure of the underlying cause. So why does joint pain occur after alcohol consumption?

Why Does Joint Pain Occur After Drinking Alcohol?

There are two primary reasons for joint pain following alcohol intake. First, alcohol impairs balance and coordination—especially when walking on uneven surfaces—placing abnormal stress on the knee joints. This can lead to injury not only to the knee joint itself but also to surrounding soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, fascia, and tendons. Local inflammatory changes, along with congestion and swelling, may subsequently develop, resulting in pronounced joint pain.

Second, alcohol consumption often induces a sensation of warmth—particularly during the first half of the night—followed by a drop in body temperature during the latter half, increasing susceptibility to chilling. This temperature fluctuation can exacerbate pre-existing intra-articular inflammation, especially in individuals with prior knee injuries, chronic conditions such as patellar chondromalacia, or osteoarthritis. Reduced local blood circulation leads to accumulation of inflammatory mediators and metabolic byproducts (e.g., lactic acid), thereby intensifying joint pain.

It is important to keep the affected joints warm to prevent exposure to cold drafts or chilling. Staying well-hydrated by drinking plenty of plain water helps promote uric acid excretion. Avoid strenuous physical activity and ensure adequate rest. If localized swelling occurs, warm compresses with magnesium sulfate may be applied. Additionally, minimize joint movement; if pain persists or worsens, consult a healthcare provider for serum uric acid testing. We hope this information proves helpful!
