Introduction
In general, a normal adult blood pressure is typically below 140/90 mmHg. The systolic pressure (the “upper” number) should be below 140 mmHg, while the diastolic pressure (the “lower” number) should be below 90 mmHg. A blood pressure of 90/60 mmHg or higher is generally considered healthy; however, a reading below 90/60 mmHg indicates hypotension (low blood pressure).

In daily life, people often monitor their blood pressure, as both high and low blood pressure can adversely affect health. So, what constitutes a normal blood pressure reading?

Normal Blood Pressure Values

Generally speaking, for adults, a blood pressure reading below 140/89 mmHg is considered normal. The first value (systolic pressure, or “upper number”) represents the pressure during heart contraction and should be below 140 mmHg; the second value (diastolic pressure, or “lower number”) reflects the pressure during heart relaxation. A diastolic pressure above 60 mmHg—and ideally between 60–89 mmHg—is considered healthy; readings below 59 mmHg (i.e., <90/59 mmHg) indicate hypotension. Thus, normal blood pressure is defined as systolic pressure between 90–139 mmHg and diastolic pressure between 60–89 mmHg.

It is noteworthy that 140/90 mmHg—not 140/89 mmHg—is the internationally accepted threshold for diagnosing hypertension. In everyday practice, people commonly refer to the upper limit of 140 mmHg for systolic pressure and 90 mmHg for diastolic pressure as the cutoff for normal blood pressure. Therefore, a reading within or below 140/90 mmHg is generally regarded as normal.

Blood pressure below 90/60 mmHg indicates hypotension, which may be associated with conditions such as shock, anemia, or hypovolemia. Conversely, systolic pressure ≥140 mmHg or diastolic pressure ≥90 mmHg is classified as hypertension. Hypertension is categorized into three stages: Stage 1 hypertension is diagnosed when systolic pressure is ≥140 mmHg or diastolic pressure is ≥90 mmHg. A diagnosis of hypertension requires confirmation via at least three separate blood pressure measurements on different occasions, all yielding readings ≥140/90 mmHg.
