Introduction
Actively manage the underlying disease: Conditions such as metabolic disorders, hypertension, and anemia may cause the aforementioned symptoms; therefore, effective control of these primary conditions is essential. Adjust sleeping position: If, on top of managing the underlying condition, the pulsatile tinnitus is mild, absent during daytime, and occurs only during nighttime sleep, modifying sleep posture may help alleviate symptoms—specifically, positioning oneself to apply gentle pressure to the neck vessels on the side where pulsatile tinnitus is perceived.

Pulsatile tinnitus typically refers to a rhythmic sound heard in the ear that synchronizes with the patient’s heartbeat; however, this phenomenon is not persistent. So, how is pulsatile tinnitus treated?

How Is Pulsatile Tinnitus Treated?

1. Active management of underlying conditions: Conditions such as metabolic disorders, hypertension, and anemia may contribute to pulsatile tinnitus; therefore, effective control of these primary diseases is essential.
2. Adjustment of sleeping posture: If pulsatile tinnitus is mild—occurring only during nighttime sleep and absent during daytime—postural modification may help alleviate symptoms. Specifically, gently rotating the neck toward the unaffected side can mildly compress the cervical vessels on the affected side, thereby reducing blood flow velocity and effectively diminishing the tinnitus.
3. Surgical intervention (e.g., “00-605” procedure): In severe cases where loud, continuous pulsatile tinnitus persists both day and night, surgical treatment may be required for definitive resolution. Prior to surgery, precise identification of the offending vessel responsible for the tinnitus is mandatory.

Following onset of pulsatile tinnitus, patients commonly experience abnormal auditory sensations—often described as intrusive or disturbing noises—within the affected ear. This frequently leads to insomnia and irritability at night. Chronic sleep deprivation may subsequently trigger emotional disturbances, manifesting as irritability, anger, depression, and other mood-related symptoms.

During treatment for pulsatile tinnitus, dietary care is crucial. Patients are advised to consume light, easily digestible foods that promote restful sleep—such as milk, red dates (jujubes), Chinese yam, egg custard, and congee—which can effectively alleviate associated symptoms.
