Introduction
Recurrent oral ulcers in patients are often associated with immune dysfunction, bacterial or viral infections, and irregular lifestyle habits. Additionally, deficiencies in vitamins and trace elements, malnutrition, and consumption of greasy, fried, or spicy/irritating foods may also contribute to oral ulcer development. Poor dietary habits and inadequate oral hygiene can likewise lead to recurrent oral ulcers.

Oral ulcers commonly cause significant discomfort and inconvenience to patients. Even minor irritation can trigger intense pain, and frequent recurrence can severely diminish quality of life. So, what causes recurrent oral ulcers?

Causes of Recurrent Oral Ulcers

Frequent oral ulcers are often associated with immune system dysregulation, bacterial or viral infections, and irregular lifestyle habits. Additionally, deficiencies in vitamins and trace elements, malnutrition, and consumption of greasy, fried, or spicy/irritating foods may also contribute to ulcer development. Poor dietary habits and inadequate oral hygiene can further predispose individuals to recurrent oral ulcers. Insufficient rest and endocrine imbalances are other potential contributing factors.

Oral ulcers are closely linked to vitamin deficiencies; therefore, increasing intake of vitamin-rich foods is recommended. Foods high in vitamin C and vitamin B₂ are particularly beneficial. Alternatively, vitamin C or B₂ tablets may be ground into a fine powder and applied directly to the ulcerated area. Pomegranate is another highly recommended food—it is rich in multiple vitamins and possesses natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, drinking pomegranate juice regularly may help alleviate symptoms of oral ulcers.

In daily life, consuming yogurt after developing an oral ulcer may be helpful. Yogurt contains abundant lactic acid bacteria, which help moisturize and protect mucosal cells—thereby supporting ulcer healing. It is advisable to drink one cup of yogurt per day. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
