How long does it take for the corpus cavernosum to recover after injury?
The male penile tissue is primarily composed of the corpora cavernosa. Injury to the corpora cavernosa may result from trauma, excessive masturbation, unrestrained sexual activity, or improper force during intercourse.
There are several types of corporal injury, and recovery time varies depending on the specific type.
① Penile Contusion
In cases of penile contusion, the corpora cavernosa sustain concurrent contusion or hematoma formation. Mild corporal contusions typically resolve within approximately two weeks; however, severe contusions or those associated with hematoma may require up to one month for full recovery.

② Penile Fracture
Penile fracture usually involves rupture of the tunica albuginea and corpus cavernosum on one side. Surgical intervention is required to restore continuity of the corpora cavernosa, along with thorough debridement, hemostasis, and prevention of thrombosis. Postoperatively, recovery of the corpora cavernosa generally takes at least one month. In patients with associated hematoma or infection, recovery may extend to two months.
During the recovery period, patients should maintain a light diet, increase intake of vitamins and trace elements, and consume foods that support kidney health and sperm retention. Regular follow-up examinations are recommended as needed, and patients should adhere to their physician’s specific guidance.
