Introduction
The exact cause of oral ulcers remains unclear; however, the majority of cases are associated with psychological factors such as mental stress, anxiety, and poor sleep. Additionally, local irritants—including residual tooth roots or crowns, ill-fitting dental restorations, and dental calculus—can also contribute. Trauma is another potential cause: for instance, accidentally biting the lip may lead to an oral ulcer developing at the site of the wound.

Some patients with oral ulcers are unaware of the underlying causes of their condition, which then develops spontaneously—causing significant disruption to their daily life and work. So, what causes oral ulcers?

What Causes Oral Ulcers?

The most common causes of oral ulcers include “excess internal heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept) and vitamin deficiencies. These factors may lead to the appearance of white spots and pain within the mouth, accompanied by redness (erythema), and sometimes even toothache. Vitamin deficiency—or prolonged physical overexertion leading to chronic sleep deprivation—may also contribute to ulcer development.

Therefore, patients with oral ulcers should ensure adequate sleep, maintain a positive mental state, reduce occupational and daily stress, and eliminate negative psychological factors. Persistent sleep deprivation can delay healing and prolong recovery time. Strengthening the body’s immune defenses is essential to help prevent recurrent oral ulcers. Additionally, regular physical exercise is recommended to improve overall physical fitness and enhance immunity.

In daily life, patients should avoid spicy and irritating foods and instead consume more fresh vegetables and fruits to bolster immunity and resistance. Should any discomfort or abnormal symptoms arise, prompt medical evaluation at a healthcare facility is advised, followed by appropriate management under the guidance of a qualified physician.
