Introduction
Laser Therapy: Hyperpigmented macules or spots on the face are commonly congenital, such as melanocytic nevi, freckles, or nevus of Ota. For removal of freckles and nevus of Ota–like lesions, Q-switched or picosecond lasers are routinely used in clinical practice. To remove facial melanocytic nevi smaller than 2 mm in diameter, fractional laser treatment may be employed; concurrently, patients undergo facial dermal nevus removal.

If melanin deposits appear on the face, they are most commonly caused by frequent sun exposure. So, how can facial melanin be removed?

How to Remove Melanin from the Face

Removing facial melanin—i.e., treating hyperpigmented spots or patches—requires tailored approaches based on the underlying cause and nature of the pigmentation. Specific treatment options include:
Laser therapy: Hyperpigmented spots or patches on the face often stem from congenital pigmentary disorders, such as melanocytic nevi, freckles, or nevus of Ota. Clinically, Q-switched lasers or picosecond lasers are commonly used to treat freckles and nevus of Ota-like lesions. For melanocytic nevi smaller than 2 mm in diameter, fractional or carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers may be employed for removal. Patients should consult a dermatologist regarding facial pigmented lesions.

Pharmacological treatment: For post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, cosmetic-induced pigmentary dermatitis, or other pigmentary skin disorders, topical or systemic medications are recommended. These include high-dose oral vitamin C and vitamin E supplementation, as well as topical tyrosinase inhibitors and hydroquinone.

Regardless of the underlying cause, patients with facial hyperpigmented spots or patches should rigorously avoid sun exposure to prevent darkening, enlargement, or proliferation of these lesions due to ultraviolet radiation. Wishing you good health and happiness!
