Introduction
Drooling during sleep may be caused by psychological factors in the patient. This is especially likely when the patient experiences high levels of stress or tension during daytime work or study, or suffers from negative emotions such as depression, anxiety, or anger. Alternatively, it may result from oral conditions including periodontitis, gingivitis, severe dental caries, or malocclusion.

In daily life, many people experience drooling or teeth grinding (bruxism) during sleep—phenomena that not only disturb the sleep of those nearby but may also harm one’s own health. A common myth about teeth grinding is that it signifies family prosperity during leisure time; this belief is absolutely false. So why does drooling occur during sleep?

  Why Drooling Occurs During Sleep

Drooling during sleep may stem from psychological factors. Specifically, individuals who experience high levels of stress or mental strain during daytime work or study—or who suffer from negative emotions such as depression, anxiety, or anger—may be more prone to this phenomenon. It may also result from oral health issues, including periodontitis, gingivitis, severe dental caries, or malocclusion. Additionally, poor sleeping posture—such as lying on one side in a way that compresses the parotid gland—can contribute to drooling. In summary, multiple factors may be involved, and appropriate interventions should target the underlying cause(s).

Irregular sleep-wake schedules, prolonged periods of intense mental labor—especially among individuals engaged in fine-detail work—as well as physical fatigue are all potential contributors to nocturnal bruxism. Trace elements play essential roles in maintaining normal human physiological function. Although required only in minute quantities, they are indispensable. Deficiencies in trace elements may therefore influence both sleep quality and bruxism. Delayed or disrupted sleep not only impairs overall sleep quality but may also exacerbate symptoms of various physical conditions. To effectively alleviate or resolve these issues, interventions must address the root causes.

It is recommended to consume nutrient-rich foods such as milk, eggs, lean meat, and soy products, and to favor light, palatable meals while ensuring adequate rest. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
