How long does it take for alcohol in breast milk to be metabolized?
Disease description:
I am currently breastfeeding. I had some alcohol today and cannot breastfeed. How long does it take for alcohol to be metabolized out of breast milk?
Drinking alcohol during breastfeeding is contraindicated, as alcohol can pass into breast milk and be absorbed by the infant. Alcohol metabolism typically takes approximately 24 hours; therefore, breastfeeding must be avoided for 24 hours after alcohol consumption. During this period, increasing water intake may help accelerate metabolism and promote faster elimination of alcohol from the body. Additionally, women who are breastfeeding should avoid alcohol, as well as highly stimulating beverages such as coffee and strong tea, which may adversely affect the infant’s neurological development.
