Can drinking alcohol worsen allergic rhinitis?
I am 23 years old and have allergic rhinitis. Recently, I am planning to go out with my female friends and may consume alcohol. However, I am very concerned about my rhinitis. I would like to know whether drinking alcohol can worsen allergic rhinitis?

In general, patients with allergic rhinitis may experience worsening of symptoms after consuming alcohol.
Allergic rhinitis is a common allergic condition in which the nasal mucosa reacts to allergens, causing symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing. Alcohol is a stimulant that causes blood vessels to dilate and increases blood circulation, thereby exacerbating the inflammatory response of the nasal mucosa and making symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing more pronounced. Additionally, alcohol consumption may affect immune system function, intensifying allergic reactions.
For individuals with allergic rhinitis, it is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption as much as possible, especially during episodes of rhinitis. Patients should also avoid exposure to allergens, maintain nasal hygiene, and avoid excessive fatigue and emotional stress to alleviate symptoms. If patients with allergic rhinitis need to consume alcohol, they should do so under a doctor's guidance and carefully control the amount. They should also closely monitor any changes in symptoms after drinking; if symptoms worsen or other discomfort occurs, they should seek medical attention promptly.
