How much can blood glucose levels differ within ten minutes?
I have diabetes, and recently I’ve noticed that my blood glucose levels vary significantly within just 10 minutes. Could you please tell me how much blood glucose can normally fluctuate within a 10-minute period?
Blood glucose changes within a 10-minute period typically depend on factors such as diet, gastrointestinal absorption, and the type of diabetes.
After eating, blood glucose levels gradually rise; however, within 10 minutes, the change is usually not significant, because food must first undergo digestion and absorption before being converted into glucose. In type 1 diabetes—characterized by an absolute deficiency of insulin secretion—blood glucose fluctuations may be more pronounced. In contrast, in type 2 diabetes—where some endogenous insulin is still present—glucose fluctuations tend to be relatively smaller.
In the absence of specific dietary intake or other interfering factors, blood glucose typically varies by no more than 2–3 mmol/L within 10 minutes. If abnormal changes occur, prompt medical evaluation is recommended.
