Disease description:

My grandfather has heart disease. His most recent examination revealed frequent ventricular premature contractions (VPCs); some occur in pairs, and a portion exhibit bigeminy. What does this indicate?

Frequent ventricular premature beats (VPBs), occasionally occurring in pairs and sometimes presenting in bigeminy, refer to premature contractions originating from the ventricles—also termed ventricular premature contractions. In bigeminy, each normal sinus beat is followed by a ventricular premature beat, resulting in a recurring rhythm characterized by this alternating pattern—hence the term “frequent VPBs with bigeminal rhythm.” If you are otherwise healthy, potential triggers may include smoking, coffee or alcohol consumption, psychological stress, hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, myocardial ischemia, hypoxia, or anesthesia. Common underlying conditions associated with VPBs include hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, rheumatic heart disease, and mitral valve prolapse.
