Itching of the nipple may arise from various causes: - If caused by chronic nipple inflammation—often resulting from increased nipple and areolar secretions that are not cleaned promptly—local disinfection with iodophor followed by application of roxithromycin ointment or Bactroban (mupirocin) ointment is recommended. - If due to nipple eczema, oral antihistamines may be prescribed alongside topical application of Predisone (betamethasone dipropionate and clotrimazole) ointment. - If triggered by contact with allergens, topical corticosteroid ointments such as compound dexamethasone acetate ointment may be used. - If attributable to dry skin, moisturizing lotions can help alleviate symptoms. Additionally, maintaining nipple hygiene and wearing breathable, cotton undergarments is advised.
