Is anemia during pregnancy with a hemoglobin level of 96 g/L severe?
Disease description:
A few months ago, I discovered I was pregnant during a routine checkup. During my most recent prenatal examination, I was found to have anemia with a hemoglobin level of 96 g/L. Is a hemoglobin level of 96 g/L considered severe anemia during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, many women develop physiological anemia. The most critical indicator for diagnosing anemia is hemoglobin level. A hemoglobin concentration of 96 g/L indicates moderate anemia—not particularly severe. However, anemia during pregnancy warrants appropriate pharmacological intervention; otherwise, it may adversely affect not only the mother but also fetal growth and development, as reduced maternal hemoglobin impairs fetal blood supply and oxygen delivery. For a pregnant woman with a hemoglobin level of 96 g/L, oral iron supplementation is generally recommended.
