Disease description:

My mother woke up this morning and suddenly appeared to have facial paralysis—her mouth was severely crooked when she spoke. I’m not sure if this is facial palsy. Could you please advise how facial neuritis (with mouth deviation during speech) is treated?

Dr. Zhang Ligong
Facial asymmetry during speech is indeed commonly attributed to facial neuritis (Bell’s palsy), often triggered by recent bacterial or other infections. Trauma is another possible cause, though less common. In rare cases, it may result from exposure to wind or cold after physical exhaustion. A hospital evaluation is recommended for definitive diagnosis. In the meantime, medications that dispel wind-dampness and promote meridian circulation may be used—however, specific drug selection and dosage must follow physician guidance. Local massage may also be beneficial.
