What to Do If Your Baby Is Allergic to Infant Formula
Disease description:
We recently introduced formula milk to our child, but the child has had diarrhea after each feeding. After a hospital examination, the doctor diagnosed a formula milk allergy. What should we do if an infant is allergic to formula milk?
If an infant develops an allergy to infant formula, consumption of the currently used formula must be discontinued immediately. If breastfeeding is still possible, exclusive breastfeeding is strongly recommended to prevent further allergic reactions. In the absence of breast milk, switching to a different type of formula—such as a hydrolyzed protein formula or an amino acid–based formula—is advised. Once the infant reaches an appropriate age for complementary feeding, suitable complementary foods may be introduced gradually. It is recommended to begin with cereals and vegetables, then progressively advance to meats, fish purées, and porridge. This approach helps reduce overall formula intake and minimizes exposure of the gastrointestinal tract to allergens.
