Disease description:

I have a lot of dental calculus and prefer ultrasonic teeth cleaning. However, I’d like to ask: what are the potential risks or side effects associated with your ultrasonic teeth cleaning procedure?

Dr. Liu Dong
Mild pain may occur after ultrasonic teeth cleaning and typically resolves spontaneously over time. If the pain is severe, over-the-counter analgesics may be taken. Frequent ultrasonic cleanings may damage the gums. Moreover, poor oral hygiene following the procedure can allow bacteria to easily invade the treatment site and cause infection; any signs of infection should be addressed promptly. Gingival bleeding may also occur after ultrasonic teeth cleaning—particularly in patients with red, swollen gums. If bleeding persists for an extended period, immediate medical evaluation and appropriate treatment at a hospital are recommended.
