In general, there may be mild pain during the ultrasonic teeth cleaning process, but it is usually within a tolerable range. Ultrasonic teeth cleaning removes dental calculus, plaque, and other debris from the tooth surfaces through high-frequency vibrations, which may cause some irritation to the gum tissue, resulting in mild pain or discomfort. If an individual has significant gum inflammation, they may experience more intense discomfort during the cleaning.

The level of discomfort may vary depending on the amount of dental calculus present. When there is a large amount of calculus, more vibrational energy from the ultrasonic device may be required to effectively remove the deposits, potentially increasing the sensation of pain. Different teeth also vary in their sensitivity to the ultrasonic vibrations. Front teeth, especially the lower front teeth, tend to be smaller with thinner dentin, making them more susceptible to stimulation and thus more likely to cause pain. In contrast, the back molars are larger and have thicker dentin, making them less sensitive.

To reduce discomfort during the cleaning process, dentists often use local anesthesia before cleaning for patients with extreme tooth sensitivity or severe periodontal disease, ensuring a more comfortable experience. If pain or sensitivity persists, using anti-sensitivity toothpaste or consulting a professional dentist may be considered.
