Side Effects of the Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine
Disease description:
My child is eight months old and is due for the Japanese encephalitis vaccine. What are the potential side effects of this vaccine?
The Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine is used to prevent Japanese encephalitis and is currently available in two types: live attenuated vaccine and inactivated vaccine. Generally, no adverse reactions occur after vaccination. However, some young children may develop fever as a side effect post-vaccination; this is typically low-grade and can be managed by observation, encouraging increased fluid intake, and physical cooling measures. Such fevers usually resolve within 48 hours. Localized redness, swelling, or pain at the injection site may also occur but typically subsides gradually within two to three days.
