Chancroid can be treated with oral antibiotics under a physician’s guidance; commonly used agents include ceftriaxone and azithromycin. If extensive infection involves the genitalia or surrounding skin, topical antibiotic ointments—such as clindamycin phosphate gel or fusidic acid cream—may be applied, often combined with wet compresses using boric acid solution. In cases of local purulent discharge or abscess formation, patients should seek medical care for incision and drainage or needle aspiration of the pus.
