Chancres can recur. A chancre is the primary stage of syphilis, and syphilis is a disease prone to recurrence. Even after successful treatment, if high-risk sexual activity occurs again, reinfection with Treponema pallidum is highly likely. In some cases, standard treatments may not completely eliminate the pathogen; although symptoms and signs may disappear temporarily, syphilis can reappear over time.
