Our baby has been experiencing mild constipation recently after drinking the current formula. We’d like to try switching to a different formula to see if it helps. May we switch formulas directly?

Babies should not switch formulas directly. Most infants still have underdeveloped gastrointestinal function; an abrupt formula change can easily cause digestive discomfort, including bloating, nausea, vomiting, and—in severe cases—diarrhea. Whether transitioning between stages (e.g., from Stage 1 to Stage 2) or switching brands, a gradual transition is always required. During the transition, begin by mixing the original formula with the new formula. Gradually increase the proportion of the new formula while decreasing that of the old one. Additionally, supplementing with probiotics may help ease the transition for your baby.
