Hello, the optimal time for Down syndrome screening is between 16–18 weeks of gestation, though it can generally be performed between 15–20 weeks. Pregnant women under age 35 are eligible for Down syndrome screening; however, women aged 35 and older—considered advanced maternal age—should proceed directly to non-invasive prenatal DNA testing (NIPT) or amniocentesis. Down syndrome screening involves drawing a blood sample from the pregnant woman to assess the likelihood of fetal chromosomal abnormalities, particularly Down syndrome. We hope this information is helpful. Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy!
