Molluscum contagiosum and flat warts differ in terms of causative viral species, clinical appearance, and treatment approaches. Molluscum contagiosum is caused by infection with the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) and typically presents as discrete, flesh-colored papules. As these papules grow, a characteristic central umbilication (small dimple) becomes visible at the apex; when expressed, a white, cheesy molluscum body can be extruded. In contrast, flat warts result from human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and appear as smooth-surfaced, flat-topped or slightly raised papular lesions, often arranged in patches. They are generally asymptomatic—neither painful nor pruritic. Surgical removal is considered the optimal treatment for molluscum contagiosum, whereas flat warts respond well to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapies.
