What causes dry, scaly skin on the lower legs?
Disease description:
My calves have recently become dry, accompanied by scaly, fish-scale-like skin. What causes dry, scaly (ichthyosis-like) skin on the calves?
Dry, scaly skin on the lower legs is typically ichthyosis. Ichthyosis is commonly inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Clinically, it presents with dry skin on the extremities and the extensor surfaces of the lower legs, accompanied by fine white, gray, or translucent scales. During autumn and winter, affected areas often exhibit reduced sweating and sebum secretion; symptoms tend to improve in the humid conditions of summer. The primary treatment principle is to enhance skin hydration and prevent transepidermal water loss.
