Lumbar disc herniation causing sciatica is typically due to nerve root compression or injury resulting from the herniated disc. Primary symptoms include pain and fatigue in the buttocks and lateral aspects of the calves, often exacerbated by excessive abdominal straining. Wearing high-waisted, narrow-fitting pants may help support the lumbar region. For severe pain, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) acupuncture can be used for analgesia; alternatively, oral ibuprofen or Zhushima tablets may be taken for pain relief. Prior to and following massage therapy (tuina), strict bed rest is recommended—typically for about two weeks post-massage. Once symptoms have largely subsided, patients may gradually resume daily activities while wearing a lumbar support brace. After pain has significantly improved, progressive strengthening exercises for the lumbar and back muscles should be initiated—such as walking backward—and may be combined with calisthenics or Tai Chi. Wishing you good health!
