Hepatitis C is a viral liver disease caused by infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). It is highly contagious; therefore, appropriate personal protective measures must be taken to prevent transmission. However, casual, everyday contact—such as talking together, sharing meals, or using the same toilet—does not typically result in HCV infection. Currently, hepatitis C is curable. Patients must follow their physician’s guidance for proper medication use; treatment generally lasts approximately three months and leads to cure in most cases.
