How to Test for HIV/AIDS
Disease description:
I used to frequently meet online acquaintances in person, and I’m now constantly worried about having contracted HIV. I’d like to get tested at a hospital—how do I get tested for HIV?
HIV testing requires a blood draw at a hospital to detect HIV antibodies. After engaging in high-risk behavior, individuals can undergo HIV antibody testing. If the initial test result is positive, a confirmatory retest must be conducted at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A final positive result from the CDC confirms an HIV diagnosis. If the initial test result is negative but high-risk behavior has occurred, follow-up testing is recommended monthly. Only after the “window period” has passed and repeated tests continue to yield negative results can HIV infection be confidently ruled out.
