Will oral mucosa heal spontaneously if betel nut chewing is discontinued?
Disease description:
I used to enjoy chewing betel nuts. Will my oral mucosa heal spontaneously if I stop chewing betel nuts?
It typically resolves spontaneously within about one week. While chewing betel nut, certain substances are released from the nut that damage the oral mucosa, leading to mucosal lesions. Additionally, betel nut exerts mechanical irritation on the oral mucosa, causing further injury. The oral mucosa has a rich blood supply, strong regenerative capacity, and rapid recovery; however, in individuals who chew betel nut, healing time is prolonged.
