What is multiple Nabothian cysts of the cervix, and how serious is it?
Disease description:
After intercourse with my husband, I always experience vaginal bleeding, and sometimes I also feel itching in the external genitalia. Upon examination, I was diagnosed with multiple Nabothian cysts of the cervix. What is this condition, and is it serious?
Nabothian cysts of the cervix are a form of chronic cervicitis. Their primary pathogenic mechanism involves chronic inflammatory stimulation leading to inflammation of cervical glands, with subsequent obstruction of glandular duct openings—preventing drainage of secretions and resulting in cyst formation. This is a benign cervical lesion. Mild cervical cysts are typically asymptomatic and are often discovered incidentally during routine gynecological examinations. More severe cysts may increase vaginal discharge; therefore, before initiating treatment, routine screening for cervical precancerous lesions and human papillomavirus (HPV) testing should be performed.
