Can patients with ankylosing spondylitis perform deep squats?
Disease description:
A friend has been diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis and has been performing deep squats regularly over the past few days. Is it safe for individuals with ankylosing spondylitis to perform deep squats?
Deep squats are not recommended for patients with ankylosing spondylitis. This condition can damage the sacroiliac joints and the soft tissues surrounding the spine; performing deep squats may increase spinal load, exacerbate muscle rigidity and spasm, intensify pain and other discomforts, and hinder disease control. Patients are advised to avoid high-intensity physical activities and simultaneously ensure adequate nutritional intake to enhance immune function.
