Disease description:

I previously visited a sex worker, and recently I noticed a rash on my genital area, accompanied by mild itching. I’m worried that I might have contracted HIV. Does the rash associated with early-stage HIV infection cause itching?

Early-stage HIV rash is typically non-pruritic (non-itchy). The initial rash associated with HIV infection—termed “acute HIV rash”—results from viremia and acute immune system damage, and is generally not accompanied by itching. This early rash commonly appears as red, purple, or even black maculopapular lesions, reflecting hypoxic (oxygen-deficient) skin changes. It most frequently occurs on the face and anterior chest, but may also involve the extremities and genitalia; in some cases, it may be painful. The rash is often accompanied by fever, malaise, and diarrhea. Individuals experiencing such symptoms are advised to seek medical evaluation and undergo further diagnostic testing at a healthcare facility.
