Can people with osteoporosis practice yoga?
Disease description:
I usually enjoy exercising, especially practicing yoga. However, I was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis. May I ask whether it’s safe to practice yoga if I have osteoporosis?
Individuals with osteoporosis can practice yoga, but the intensity must be carefully controlled. Most yoga poses require supporting the body’s weight with the hands, feet, or other limbs. If core strength is weak, individuals may lose balance and fall during these weight-bearing poses. Moreover, due to reduced bone density, even a minor fall can result in fractures. Therefore, it is advisable to choose gentle, progressive yoga routines that enhance blood circulation and improve flexibility. Additionally, avoid forceful stretching during practice, as this may also cause injury in individuals with osteoporosis.
