What HbA1c level confirms a diagnosis of diabetes?
Disease description:
I tested my glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) over the past two days to determine whether I have diabetes. What HbA1c level confirms a diagnosis of diabetes?
An HbA1c level above 7% may indicate diabetes; however, a definitive diagnosis of diabetes requires additional testing—such as blood glucose measurements. Typically, diabetes is diagnosed if:
- Fasting plasma glucose is ≥7.0 mmol/L, or
- Two-hour postprandial plasma glucose is ≥11.1 mmol/L.
