Are there alternative methods to gastroscopy for gastrointestinal examination?

Disease description:

Recently, I’ve been feeling bloated in my stomach and have lost my appetite. I went to the hospital for gastrointestinal examinations, and the doctor recommended a gastroscopy. However, I’ve heard from friends that gastroscopy is very uncomfortable, so I’d prefer not to undergo it. Are there alternative methods for gastrointestinal examination besides gastroscopy?

In addition to gastroscopy, gastrointestinal examinations may also include barium meal studies; however, gastroscopy generally provides superior diagnostic accuracy. A barium meal study is a type of gastrointestinal radiographic contrast examination performed under X-ray imaging to detect abnormalities in the digestive tract. It typically reveals only the outline of the gastrointestinal tract and often fails to detect subtle lesions, resulting in lower diagnostic accuracy compared to endoscopic examination. Gastroscopy allows clear visualization of the location and size of lesions. For patients who experience anxiety or fear regarding conventional gastroscopy, painless (sedated) gastroscopy is an available alternative.
