Why Do Children Develop Strabismus?

Disease description:

I hadn’t noticed it before—until last week, when a neighbor mentioned that my child’s eyes appeared slightly misaligned. Upon closer observation, I also noticed the misalignment. Could you please explain why children develop strabismus?

Dr. Chen You
The most common cause of strabismus in children is refractive error—namely, high hyperopia (farsightedness), high myopia (nearsightedness) in one eye, or astigmatism leading to unequal visual acuity between the two eyes. When strabismus has a definite refractive cause, treatment is well-established: children require a comprehensive refraction examination and prescription eyeglasses. In most cases, wearing corrective glasses yields favorable treatment outcomes. Patients are advised to practice good visual hygiene after treatment and avoid eye strain.
