What Causes Twitching or Jerking During Sleep?
Disease description:
Lately, I’ve noticed that my husband occasionally twitches or jerks while sleeping at night—not very frequently. I’d like to ask what might be causing this.
Sleep-related muscle twitches or jerks are typically physiological in nature. As the body transitions into sleep, the brain enters a resting state, leading to reduced inhibitory control over spinal nerves; this can result in involuntary muscle twitches or jerks during sleep. Such occurrences are considered normal physiological phenomena and require no specific intervention, nor do they adversely affect health. Additionally, frequent diarrhea or vomiting may cause electrolyte imbalances, which can also lead to these symptoms.
