Elevated cholesterol levels alone do not cause diabetes; however, patients with diabetes may experience increased cholesterol levels. Repeatedly elevated blood glucose levels can lead to a diagnosis of diabetes. Patients should actively control their blood glucose, maintain a light and balanced diet, and avoid high-sugar foods. If hyperlipidemia co-occurs, lipid-lowering therapy with statins or fibrates is required.
